DOUBLE FREEDOM (LA LIBERTAD DOBLE)
A FILM by lisandro alonso
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Films We Like is proud to announce the acquisition of Canadian rights to Double Freedom (La Libertad Doble), the new film from celebrated Argentine filmmaker Lisandro Alonso, one of contemporary cinema’s most singular and uncompromising voices.
The film had its world premiere in the prestigious Directors’ Fortnight section of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where Alonso’s quietly radical cinema first began attracting international attention twenty-five years ago.
Double Freedom returns to the landscape and central figure of Alonso’s landmark 2001 debut, La Libertad. Once again played by Misael Saavedra, the solitary woodcutter at the heart of that film is revisited a quarter-century later. What emerges is not simply a sequel, but a profound reflection on the passage of time, the dignity and precarity of labour, and the responsibilities that can transform even the most fiercely independent life.
Born in Buenos Aires, Alonso emerged as a defining figure of the New Argentine Cinema with La libertad, which premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2001. His subsequent films—including Los muertos, Fantasma, Liverpool, Jauja and Eureka—have established a body of work distinguished by its formal precision, sensory power and fascination with solitude, landscape and the passage of time.
