THE MAD DOG OF EUROPE

A FILM by RUBIKA SHAH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Films We Like is pleased to announce the Canadian release of The Mad Dog of Europe, the newest documentary by award-winning filmmaker Rubika Shah, director of White Riot.

In 1932, Herman J. Mankiewicz — who would become world-famous a decade later as the co-writer of Citizen Kane — wrote The Mad Dog of Europe, a visionary anti-Nazi screenplay that warned of Hitler’s rise to power and imagined the destruction of a German-Jewish family as fascism took hold. At a moment when much of the world still refused to recognize the danger, Mankiewicz saw clearly what was coming.

But the film was never made. Caught between diplomatic pressure, Hollywood’s economic interests, and the studios’ fear of losing access to the German market, The Mad Dog of Europe was quietly buried. Shah’s documentary resurrects the story of this impossible production, revealing a chilling chapter in film history: a moment when Hollywood had the chance to confront fascism — and chose silence.
