REMASTERED + REPRESSED
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Guy Maddin’s Careful Returns in a New 4K Restoration
Films We Like is delighted to announce the acquisition of the 4K restoration of Careful, the delirious early masterpiece by legendary Canadian auteur Guy Maddin (My Winnipeg, The Saddest Music in the World).
The restoration was undertaken by Sphinx Productions in association with Zeitgeist Films from the original 35mm camera negatives preserved by the TIFF Cinematheque Library. The restoration was supervised by Guy Maddin, ensuring that every avalanche-prone whisper and lurid tint remains gloriously intact.
This is the third restoration of Maddin’s films by Sphinx Productions, following the restorations of Tales from the Gimli Hospital and Archangel.
The world premiere of the restoration will take place at SAVE AS, a program within the International Film Festival of Ottawa (IFFO) devoted to the preservation and restoration of classic cinema, at the Mayfair Theatre on Friday, March 20th at 9:00 PM EST.
Originally released in 1992, Careful unfolds in the precarious 19th-century Alpine village of Tolzbad, where the townspeople — adults, children, and livestock alike — must speak softly and step lightly lest they trigger the avalanches that loom above them. Beneath this enforced politeness, however, passions churn wildly. Repressed desires erupt into incestuous love triangles (and occasionally quadrangles), with consequences that are equal parts tragic, absurd, and operatic.
Bathed in glowing hand-tinted colours and staged with the fervour of a rediscovered silent melodrama, Careful plays like a fever dream uncovered in a snowbank — part operetta, part Freudian avalanche, and entirely the invention of Guy Maddin.
