PRESENTS
ZODIAC KILLER PROJECT
A FILM by CHARLIE SHACKLETON
For Immediate Release – Films We Like is excited to announce the Canadian release of Zodiac Killer Project, director Charlie Shackleton’s true-crime documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where it was awarded Sundance’s NEXT Innovator Award for its “witty narration and fascinating and deft storytelling.”
Zodiac Killer Project is a meta-documentary by Charlie Shackleton that began as an adaptation of Lyndon E. Lafferty's book The Zodiac Killer Cover-Up, but pivoted when the Lafferty family withdrew their support. Rather than abandon the project, Shackleton turned the film into a self-aware critique of true crime storytelling, using static shots of empty locations paired with dry, reflective narration to explore both his failed production and the genre’s familiar tropes. The result is a formally inventive and quietly provocative meditation on obsession, narrative ethics, and the appetite for mystery.
