The film centres around a young man who lives with his Neapolitan family in a nondescript apartment. Vincenzo (Vincenzo Pacilli) works without a contract at a blacksmith's. His sister seeks greater independence, but all of her squabbling with their father becomes irrelevant when he suddenly dies, leaving the family stranded. Vincenzo's daily ritual of riding his moped to work gradually changes, as does his mother's routine — she now sits at her sewing machine all day, facing the risk of eviction.
