April 30, 2024 - MUBI, the global distributor, streaming service and production company and Films We Like, are pleased to announce the theatrical and streaming release dates for Levan Akin’s (And Then We Danced, Sweden’s 2019 Academy Award® entry) latest feature film, Crossing. A moving, compassionate tale of identity, acceptance and unlikely connection that transcends borders and generations, the film will be released theatrically in Canada on July 26 and will stream from August 30, 2024.

From acclaimed director Levan Akin (And Then We Danced), Crossing is a moving and tender tale of identity, acceptance and unlikely connection that transcends borders and generations.

Lia, a retired school teacher living in Georgia, hears from a young neighbour Achi that her long lost niece Tekla, a transgender woman, has crossed the border into Turkey. Hoping to bring Tekla home after a period of estrangement, Lia travels to Istanbul with the unpredictable Achi to find her. Exploring the hidden depths of the city, they cross paths with a transgender lawyer called Evrim, who helps them in their search. As a reluctant and surprising friendship forms between Achi and Lia, the unexpected duo begin to discover that Tekla may not want to be found.

With remarkably authentic performances from Mzia Arabuli and newcomers Lucas Kankava and Deniz Dumanli, Akin’s third film offers a vibrant and evocative portrait of the city of Istanbul. Humanistic and compassionate, this hopeful vision of forgiveness is a heartfelt portrayal of overcoming the degrees of separation that divide us.

Written by Akin, Crossing stars Mzia Arabuli, Lucas Kankava and Deniz Dumanlı, with cinematography from Lisabi Fridell (And Then We Danced), production design by Roger Rosenberg (The Worst Person in the World) and co-edited by Levan Akin and Emma Lagrelius. Crossing opened the Panorama section at the 2024 Berlinale for its World Premiere in February, where it was awarded the Teddy Prize Jury Award and received its UK Premiere at the BFI Flare Film Festival in March 2024.

CROSSING WILL BE IN CINEMAS IN CANADA FROM JULY 26, 2024
