Davies spins his tale with snippets of poetry and music -- some Shelley here or T.S. Eliot there, a bit of Peggy Lee, some Mahler, a hit from The Hollies. The effect? For all the grime and graffiti of Liverpool and all the sorrow inherent in the simple passage of time, this is an oddly celebratory, hopeful picture.
...a transformative experience. We emerge with a healthy understanding of Davies and the city he grew up in, wanting to see his earlier work and eagerly anticipating the material that will serve as an encore to this statement.
Davies’s narration casts a spell on his audience. Davies successfully expresses the longing emotions of home, and the diminishing effect of time.

"I arrive at 22 Lounge in the lovely Windsor Arms Hotel, where a very charming bartender clears out the back room to make way for my private chat with Terence Davies (no relation), the master British director of some of the most heart-rending works of contemporary cinema – including his latest, Of Time and the City"
"...in terms of undiluted expression of its creator’s sensibility, it’s pretty much without peer. And as awesomely unpleasant as it is it’s still pretty awesome."
